Travel Note
There are two airports you can fly into: Chania Airport or Heraklion Airport. Both are approximately 50 miles to Rethymno (where the wedding will be). There are generally more flights to Heraklion. The flight from Athens to either airport is approximately 45 minutes. There are also inter-Europe flights to both airports (for example sometimes we fly from Frankfurt directly to Heraklion). There are also ferries from Port of Piraeus (Athens) to Crete. The ferry is usually 6-8 hours. Transportation options from the airport: 1. Rent a car: this is a good option if you plan to spend extended time in Crete. It's the easiest way to get around Crete to explore different areas, especially since there is no uber. There are both automatic and manual cars available. If you plan on renting a car we recommend making a reservation in advance. 2. Taxi: Price varies but costs around 100 euros. You will be able to get a taxi when you arrive or pre-arrange for one at the airport. Trip advisor has great recommendations on cab companies you can use. Note there is no Uber or Lyft in Crete. 3. Bus: This is the cheapest option. From Heraklion you will need to take the airport bus (located just outside the airport) to the Heraklion KTEL terminal (KTEL is the primary bus system in Crete) and transfer from there to a bus to Rethymno . From Chania it is a bit easier as you can go directly from the airport to Rethymno using the bus.
