We attended the same high school and met through mutual friends right before Jon graduated. This smart ass kid I had never even heard of was supposedly going to be Valedictorian for his class, which surprised the heck out of me because I thought I was already friends with all the smart kids. We quickly became friendly competitors, testing each other to see who was really smarter. During Jon's freshman year of college he came back to visit the AVID tutors at the high school, which he had been and I currently was, and we discussed his calculus class at Newman which he had transferred into late. He ended up bringing his homework to my house a couple days later so I could show him how to do a problem and stayed for three hours (for his ego's record, we spent five minutes on his homework and the rest of the time talking)! He cleverly asked for my phone number by agreeing to come help with a community service project I was organizing (eye roll, he never came). While I was a little resistant to our friendship becoming anything more, Jon was persistent in his attempt. He was smart, kind and challenged me in ways no one else had. It didn't take me long to cave. We started dating soon after and calculus will forever be my favorite subject. :)
I met Starla during my senior year of high school, she was a junior. I had been told that she was the smartest person in her class (and possibly out of both of our classes). As it turned out, that was true, she was smarter than me. I found this out during my first year of college. I picked up calculus a couple weeks late and was over 10 hours behind. I was able to catch-up on most of the work by myself but there was one concept that kept kicking my butt. So, I got on Facebook and found that girl from high school that was “smarter” than me (I had recently seen her so that was fresh on my mind). I asked for help. She lived close by, so to help me out she invited me over. We spent 5 minutes talking about calculus and 3 hours talking about anything and everything else. By the end of the night I knew I wanted to get to know her better. A month and a half later we started dating, and 6 and a half years later she’ll be mine forever. Who’s the smarter one now honey?
