Be sure to take a free tour of Bruton Parish when you're not there for our ceremony as it's one of the original colonial buildings in Williamsburg and is still an active parish! The church is usually open for tours on Saturdays from noon - 4:00 pm, and tickets are not required for entrance. You can always check the signage outside the Duke of Gloucester Street gate for updated daily hours and more information on their offerings.
Some of our first dates were spent walking around Colonial Williamsburg! The town is mostly a restoration, but there are still some original buildings in the area as well as active archaeological sites. You can learn about colonial life and revolutionary happenings from the historic interpreters, see all kinds of animals, tour the lovely palace gardens, and more with a ticketed pass!
Williamsburg isn't the only historical hub in the area! The "Historic Triangle" also includes Jamestown and Yorktown, which each have a lot to offer. There are two sites related to Jamestown: Jamestown Settlement, where you can experience living history through the re-created colonial fort (complete with three ships), and Historic Jamestowne, where you can see the archaeological remains and current excavation process of the original settlement. In Yorktown, you can visit the battlefield where the American Revolution ended and the accompanying museum that tells the story of the war.
If you're staying for the weekend and are looking for a fun daytime activity, Busch Gardens and Water Country USA are great in the summer! They are two separate theme parks; one is for rollercoasters and one is for water slides. We have had lots of fun at these spots over the years! Tickets for both places are available through the Busch Gardens website.
Looking to do something fun when it's less hot outside? Take an evening ghost tour! Williamsburg has a variety of talented and interesting ghost guides to choose from. Check out the best ones on this Trip Advisor ranking, or visit Colonial Williamsburg's website to do an affiliated ghost tour.
Williamsburg has a wide variety of great restaurants within walking distance or a short drive of all the fun! The town has lots of pancake houses, which are always a yummy option, but our favorite breakfast places are Shorty's and First Watch. If you're looking for a casual lunch, the Cheese Shop has the best sandwiches in town. It does get crowded, though, so try Charley's at the Williamsburg airport if you want a quieter spot. Blue Talon, the DoG Street Pub, the Amber Ox, and the Hound's Tail are delicious dinner spots within walking distance of Colonial Williamsburg. Food for Thought and Craft 31 are also very good, but they are a short drive away from the restoration. Check out this Trip Advisor listing for other options!
