Ethan, his parents and Haley's parents all knew and had a plan to surprise Haley. Haley and Ethan had Christmas pictures planned, so everyone was all dressed up already. In the car, on the way to the bridge Ethan gave Haley an "early Christmas present" from his family but told her she wasn't allowed to open it until they got to the bridge and had taken most of their pictures so she "didn't cry her mascara off." As they made their way down to the bridge, Ethan spotted his family and pointed them out to Haley. They kept walking awhile then stopped, Ethan told Haley to go ahead and open the present, as she opened it he crept behind her (almost throwing up in the process) and grabbed the ring box from his sock. The present was an ornament that said "Love has a nice ring to it," as she turned back to look at him he got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Even though they were surrounded by friends and family, and even complete strangers....in that moment they were the only people in the world.
