How We Met

August 18, 2012

Amanda and Spencer first met in 2012 at Cedarville University in Cedarville, Ohio. Even though they're both from Georgia, they traveled over 1,000 combined miles to first meet each other on move-in day of freshman year. On Saturday night of orientation weekend, Cedarville had a big party for incoming freshman to mingle, where students were grouped by home state. Spencer and Amanda were the only two students from Georgia, and thus, met each other in the gauntlet of awkwardness known as forced socialization. The two of them hit it off immediately. Spencer made the first move when he gave Amanda his phone at the freshman party to get her number, with the excuse that, "Us Georgia people gotta stick together." They've had each other's number ever since, so the freshman party did its job.

Our First Date

October, 2012

Spencer was ready to ask Amanda out the first couple of weeks of the semester, but Amanda was reluctant to be distracted from her studies by the potential of romance. She even evaded an attempted first kiss with a move that came to be known as the "duck and weave." After some patient persistence, she agreed to go out with Spencer and they went on their first date. Spencer took Amanda to a local oddity known as the Hartman Rock Garden in Springfield. They ate at TGI Friday and finished the evening at Davey Moore Park, where they unintentionally caught a retired men's softball game. The date was a success!

Throughout the Years

May, 2016 - May, 2020

Amanda and Spencer remained close throughout college. They found they had many values, beliefs, and joys in common. A favorite pastime they enjoyed was taking weekend trips to explore new cities. When Spencer moved to Washington DC after graduation for a fellowship, Amanda began her graduate studies at the University of Georgia. They visited each other in DC and Atlanta whenever they could. Amanda finished her Masters of Social Work the same month Spencer began law school at UGA in 2017. She was secretly very happy he came back to Georgia to get his JD. The pair stayed best friends and constant supports for one another even in their years apart. Rekindling their love was the easiest thing they had each done. Everything was better than ever - two people, older and a little wiser, found that their person was their person after all, and nothing else made sense.

The Proposal

May 23, 2020

After the pandemic struck, Spencer's plans to propose before graduating from the University of Georgia School of Law got a little postponed. With commencement cancelled and places closed, he relied on his resourcefulness that had won Amanda over all those years ago. Amanda agreed to take some graduation pictures of him at some iconic UGA landmarks that evening. Spencer had secretly set up a beautiful proposal in the lush UGA Trial Gardens. Making a stop at the gardens was a little unusual, but Amanda didn't suspect a thing. In the middle of the gardens, a gazebo covered in climbing roses was lit up by fairy lights as well as photographs of the two of them throughout the years. Spencer asked her to marry him and she said yes so quickly, she almost missed the best part: "Us Georgia people gotta stick together."
