Nichchiyadhartham is the official engagement ceremony in Tambrahm marriages. It begins with Ganesh Pooja by the bride’s parents. The bride is gifted a new sari by the groom’s family. She is adorned with a chandan and kungumam tilak. Her sari gets filled with thengai (coconut), fruits, pakku, vetrilai, manjal, and kungumam. The ceremony concludes with an Aarti and tying a garland around the bride’s waist.

A Sangeet ceremony is like a pre-wedding reception where friends and family ceremonially welcome the couple into their lives and wish them the best for their future. This welcoming celebration often includes lots of dancing and music, religious traditions, ethnic games, ceremonial attires, delicious food, and more!

Oonjal is a swing on which the marrying couple sits and rides back and forth. They are surrounded by married ladies who sing songs praising the couple (Laali). The swinging chains are a representation of the unbreakable bond with the divine, and the swaying motion illustrates the ebb and flow of life. Despite these fluctuations, one can find inner peace and stability.

This event is the crux of the Hindu wedding ceremony composed of multiple rituals. The murtham culminates with the most important ritual, the Maangalya Dharanam which ties the knot (literally!) for the marriage. Mangalya Dharanam description: The ceremony starts with the groom's family presenting the bride with a saree and Thali (A traditional south indian necklace that is a token of the marriage). It is a symbol of acceptance into the groom’s family. The bridal saree and the Thali are passed to the wedding guests for their blessings. The bride leaves the alter for a moment to put on her sari and makes a second trip down the aisle, carrying a fresh floral garland for her groom. The bride then puts a garland on the groom, acknowledging his status as her husband. Then the groom ties the Thali around the bride’s neck to the sound of drums and pipes, symbolising ever-lasting devotion. Guests shower the newlyweds with fresh flower petals and rice grains.
