SeaTac Airport is the main airport servicing the Seattle area and will have the most options for flights. Upon arrival at SeaTac, you can rent a car and drive to Anacortes Ferry Terminal. If renting a car, it's a ~2 hours drive north to the Anacortes Ferry Terminal. You can choose to either drive onto the ferry (requires separate Ferry Reservation) or there is paid parking near the terminal at designated parking lots and walk onto the ferry.
Travel Note
Outside of flying, ferry is the only way to access the island. The ferry departs from Anacortes Ferry Terminal (2100 Ferry Terminal Rd, Anacortes, WA 98221) and arrives in Friday Harbor. You can either drive on (with a reservation) or walk on the ferry (purchase same day). Sailing duration is ~45 minutes - 1 hour. The ferry is the most difficult part of traveling to the island, especially in the peak summer season. Below are tips on using the ferry: * Driving on requires a reservation. Walking on does not. * Reservations become available in 3 waves: (1) 10am PST on April 22nd, 2025 (2) Two weeks before a specific sail date at 7am PST, and (3) 2 days before a specific sail date at 7am PST. * There is a huge rush to reserve ferry tickets so be prepared for reservations to open up. (Think waiting in a virtual line for Coachella or Taylor Swift tickets) * If you don't initially get the ferry you want, keep regularly checking since people do cancel their reservations. * Once you have your ferry reservation, you will need to pass the ticket gate at the ferry terminal at least 30 minutes prior to scheduled departure. Otherwise, you will lose your reservation. This applies even when the ferry is running behind schedule. * Walking on avoids the reservation hassle. There are parking lots near the Anacortes Ferry terminal for walk on passengers. There are many on-island transportation options available. * Not all ferries follow the same route. There are slower non-direct routes that stop at other islands before arriving at Friday Harbor.
