Brian and Katie first met in the fall of 2011, their first year of college at SUNY Oneonta. They both played in a game of Humans vs Zombies with over 100 other students. They occasionally crossed paths around campus and at ZDC (Zombie Defense Corps) meetings and, of course, became Facebook friends. "Even though I didn't know Brian super well during the first year or two, I always thought he was a cool and nice guy. Someone who wanted people who feel included. One of my favorite memories from Freshmen year was after HVZ had ended, a lot of the players still wanted to hang out, so we would go up to the college's video game lounge and play "Werewolves" where Brian would often be the game master." In 2013 Brian and Katie were both elected to ZDC eboard, Brian as Events Chair and Katie as Communications Chair. Junior year is when they started to hang out more and get to know each other better. Nothing can bond people like college-nerd-drama! Fall of 2014 started Katie and Brian's senior year. They were both so excited to have a great senior year. Since they were both finally of legal drinking age, they vowed to be drinking buddies and frequented one of the local bars, The Red Jug Pub. Throughout this time they started to get a lot closer and really enjoyed each other's company and getting to know one another more. They always thought of each other as friends... until that began to change.
Spring of 2015 was an uncertain time, with graduation fast approaching and plans for the future unclear. However, they were determined to make the most of their time left in Oneonta and had so much fun together. After graduation, Katie moved back home to Rochester and Brian to Ballston Spa. They still talked every day but the status of their relationship was still unclear. In June Katie decided to take the train to Albany to visit for Brian's 22nd birthday. That day she met a ton of Brian's friends for the first time and they had a great day getting up to shenanigans in the backyard. That night everyone sat around a bonfire exchanging stories. Eventually, the two snuck away to have a conversation on the back patio, and by the end of the night, they were officially boyfriend and girlfriend. After over a year of a long-distance relationship with many late-night phone calls, Snapchat streaks, train rides and road trips across the state, Katie and Brian signed the lease for their first apartment and officially moved in on September 3, 2016. Money was tight, but they both made it work and were so happy to finally have their own space together and build an even stronger relationship.
2019 was the year of many milestones. In the spring Katie finished up her Master's degree. To celebrate this and as a combined birthday/anniversary gift, Brian proposed a trip to Mont-Tremblant, Canada, and Katie excitedly agreed, since they typically didn't go on vacations as just the two of them. What she didn't know was it was actually Brian's intention to propose. So during their second day there, they took a gondola ride up to the top of the mountain. The views were stunning. It was May and there were still piles of snow in some places. It was chilly on the top of the mountain but the sun was still shining. Eventually, they were overlooking the view and Brian started saying "I think we need to find an excuse to come back..." and dropped to one knee. It was perfect. Pretty much immediately after getting back from the trip, the two started house hunting and had a busy summer of home buying activities and looking at wedding venues. They booked Pat's Barn for 2021 and in September they closed on their house in Colonie, NY. We all know 2020 has been a rough year. But they were always thankful for having a roof above their head, and jobs that allowed them to work remote. One bright spot of 2020 was adopting their first pet, and adorable and affectionate cat named Yumi! She has added so much joy to their lives, especially during difficult times. Katie Sorce and Brian Walker plan on getting married on September 3, 2021. We hope to see you there to celebrate this decade-long journey.
