Mykonos Top Tips

The Wedding Website of Sophie Findlay and Josh Bolton
Since most of you will be in Mykonos for a few days either side of the wedding, we thought we'd share with you some general advice following our recent visit to the Island. Please see below our Mykonos top tips!

Money

It would be wrong of us to pretend that Mykonos isn't an expensive place. However, we picked up some tips and tricks to keep costs down while you're there. ~ FOOD ~ Food is expensive, but portion sizes are enormous. If you go out for lunch, you can easily share a meal. If you go out for dinner, at the very least you can get away with sharing a starter. You can always grab gyros on the go for lunch rather than having a whole other meal. It's a much more affordable option. ~ ALCOHOL ~ If you're planning a night out or two while you're there, we'd recommend buying some alcohol in Duty Free and using this to pre-drink if you want to save some money. The average price of a beer is €11. ~ TRAVEL ~ Share taxis where possible, and if your hotel provides a free shuffle service into town, use it. There's also the option to hire a quad bike, which is a good way to see the island without having to pay for each individual journey.

Dress Code

~ EVENINGS~ Everyone dresses up in the evenings. Whether you're going for dinner, to a beach club or a few drinks on the waterfront, people make an effort. We'd recommend bringing some nicer outfits to go out in. If you head into town in denim shorts after 7pm, you'll feel underdressed. ~ FOOTWEAR ~ It can be quite hilly and there are lots of cobbled streets. Ladies - people do wear heels, and it's ok for a beach bar, but we wouldn't recommend it if you're going into town. We'd suggest packing some flat sandals to go out in. ~ WEATHER ~ The weather generally is lovely in Mykonos in May, but it's a good idea to take a light jacket as sometimes the temperature drops in the evenings and it can get cold. We'd recommend taking a pair of jeans/long trousers too just in case.

Essentials

~ HYDRATION ~ You are unable to drink the tap water in Mykonos. Your hotel may provide you with a free bottle of water per person per day, but we'd advise you to go to a supermarket or a mini mart and get a big bottle of water. ~ SUNBATHING ~ It's very easy to burn! During our visit the weather was really pleasant - it was hot enough to sunbathe but the Island breeze made it easy to sit in the sun for hours on end. BUT at the height of the day, the UV index was 10!! Make sure you bring plenty of sun cream, and remember to reapply it to avoid looking like a tomato. ~ TAXIS ~ There's plenty of taxis available in the evenings, but it's more difficult to find one from the town during the day, so make sure you note down the name/number of a taxi company from the area you're staying in. Apparently iMove is their version of Uber - we didn't use it but have heard it's quite good. Don't get ripped off - we had someone try charge an extra €10 because the taxi was a Mercedes!
