We grew up 200 miles apart, Sophie-Earle in Charleston, and me in Winston Salem, North Carolina and ended up going to different colleges that were only an hour away from each other. After college, we were both uncertain on what the future held for us. Sophie-Earle heard about a leadership program from a friend that was called the Fellows Initiative that had locations all across the nation and was considering doing the program in Florida. At the same time, my brother had just completed the same program the year prior in Winston Salem and was suggesting that I give it a shot. In some random, or not so random act of God, Sophie-Earle heard about this weird town called Winston Salem in some far off land of North Carolina. She decided to go to an interview in this random city that she had never been to before and as soon as the interview was over, she knew this was where God was calling her. I also interviewed with the program and after long and hesitant consideration, decided to give it a shot. We started the program in August of 2019 and immediately went on a retreat to the lake. On this retreat there was many seemingly unintentional, but very intentional meeting of glances and it was very apparent that there would be a deep friendship to come in the next few months. It didn't take long before we were exploring the town together (even though I grew up there) and taking long car rides. By October we both had shared our feelings for each other and decided to "spend intentional time with each other," since Fellows were not technically allowed to date one another. We continued to grow closer together and endlessly enjoy each other's time together. By Christmas, I had gone down to Charleston to meet her family and on the drive back, I had decided I wanted to marry this beautiful, artistic lady. Once the program ended we went on many grand adventures, enjoying each others love. Then, in December 2020, on a quiet beach in Charleston, we officially decided to get married.
