Sophie and Jonathan’s story began in 2018 when they were both selected as editors for The Daily Pennsylvanian, Penn’s student newspaper — Jonathan in Sports and Sophie in Comedy. Despite having both worked at the paper since they were freshmen, they didn’t know each other very well. In fact, it wasn’t until their final weeks as editors that they first became friends. That year, Sophie’s 21st birthday happened to be on the first day of winter break, and almost everyone had left campus to travel home for the holidays. Even though he was planning to leave earlier, Jonathan stayed an extra day just to celebrate with her. At this point, Sophie was pretty sure that Jonathan had a crush on her, and she decided to just go for it and kiss him. After a few months passed (and Jonathan had asked a few times), Sophie finally said yes and they started officially dating on April 11, 2019. Only one month later, they both graduated college, which meant that Jonathan went back home to Connecticut while Sophie stayed in Philly. After two years of long distance (during a pandemic no less), Jonathan, Sophie, and Sophie’s cat Maisy moved to Columbia, Maryland together in September 2021. They picked up hobbies and made new traditions — designing fun cooking challenges for one another, teaming up to reach Genius on the NYT Spelling Bee every single day, and hiking at Shenandoah each fall. They also enjoyed watching football and baseball games, even though Jonathan was a big Giants and Mets fan and Sophie rooted for the Eagles and Phillies. Together, they adopted another cat, Margo, to round out their family. It didn’t take long for Sophie and Jonathan to realize that they were going to spend the rest of their lives with each other. There wasn’t a specific moment when either of them knew, it was just something that always felt true. On June 15, 2024, Jonathan proposed and, of course, Sophie said yes. A few months later, they bought their forever home in Columbia, the city they’d grown to love together. Seven years to the day of the start of their relationship, Sophie and Jonathan are beginning the next chapter of their life together. We look forward to celebrating with you on April 11, 2026!
