When Adam and Grace first met at Camp JIM in the summer of '16, she did not want anything to do with him; their first conversation consisted of Adam telling Grace how he was voted "Best Butt" on his high school baseball team — which, in case you were wondering, is not a very good conversation starter. ;) They went their separate ways and connected again the following summer at camp (summer '17), and to Grace's surprise, they hit it off pretty well! This ended up being a pretty rough summer for the both of them, but together they worked through it, and a strong friendship blossomed out of it! And, over the next year, they would only grow closer. The year was full of tough conversations, questioning life, laughing so hard Grace would cry and Adam couldn't breathe, watching too much Animal Planet and taking too many naps (wait, can you take too many naps?), and playing video games (... and losing). Through all of that, Adam and Grace figured out that they liked each other, but instead of rushing into a relationship, they stayed friends for a while to make sure this is what God wanted for them. Adam joked once that when he finally did ask Grace out, there would be unicorns and hot air balloons... and little did Grace know, there would be. ;) After camp ended in summer '18, hours after the last campers had left from the last week of camp, like twenty minutes after the entirety of the camp had been cleaned, Adam and Grace took a lap out to the rec field to make sure that everything was cleaned how it was supposed to be. Eventually, they made it to the rec field and opened up the rec shed to make sure everything was in its place. Once inside, Adam pointed out that there was a wooden unicorn in the corner, and Grace, not connecting it to their previous conversation, just went with it. It wasn't until he took out a balloon from his pocket, asked if he was full of hot air, and blew it up, that Grace realized what was going on. He asked her out & she said yes!
After a long last week of working at Camp JIM, Grace and Adam said their goodbyes to friends and headed over to his car to begin the long car drive to his parent's house. Once to the car, Adam opened the door for Grace as he usually does, and once she was in he asked her to grab the keys out of the glovebox. Not thinking anything, she quickly grabbed the keys and when she turned to give them to Adam, he was on one knee! Super confused, Grace looked back at where she had grabbed the keys in the glovebox, and low-and-behold, there was the perfect ring in the perfect box. Adam asked, "Grace, will you marry me?" Basically, it was completely unexpected because it happened so naturally, and Grace's first response was "Wait, what??" before it was "Yes!" But she did eventually say yes, and they couldn't be more excited!
On May 2nd, Adam & Grace were married during an immediate-family only ceremony in the DeVall parents' backyard. It was abundantly windy, but it was abundantly full of love and beauty. Due to safety concerns regarding COVID, we chose to get married sooner and push our reception date back to summer 2021. While we are heartbroken we were not able to spend our wedding day with you, we hope to see you next summer!
