They met online, by chance, and followed their instinct to meet. Sonny was moving his life from BC back to Ontario, and on his way through Mel’s hometown, she met him one late night down a long dirt road, 45 minutes outside of Sudbury. They shared stories, talked about their lives and dreams, but most of all they laughed... and laughed. They felt they’ve known each other their whole lives, and were reuniting. Minutes turned to hours at the speed of light. Watching the moon rise, neither of them wanted the night to end. The laughing went on and the Sun began to rise, and Sonny had to continue on his move to his hometown, Ottawa. They both knew it was the beginnings of something very special and they're pretty damn happy they took a chance that night. They spoke non-stop every day and night after they met. They dated from a distance while Mel finished her degree at Laurentian, in Sudbury - while Sonny was living in Ottawa. They bridged their distance by meeting up regularly thanks to Sonny’s Camper Van, exploring Northern Ontario, the Great Lakes, Algonquin, the Ottawa Valley and North Carolina, etc. The cornerstones of their bond was created by their shared passion for the outdoors: camping, canoeing, hiking and being in nature. In the summer of 2019, in the backcountry of Algonquin Park – after a few long days of paddling - Sonny popped the question and presented a beautiful ring and she said yes!
