From Bangkok there are 3 ways to get to the island of Koh Tao. The first option is a flight to Koh Samui and then a ferry to Koh Tao. It is easily the quickest and most convenient way to travel, with minimal transfers involved. This is also the most expensive option. The bus from Bangkok and Ferry to Koh Tao is a very affordable alternative, however, it takes a long time. Lomprayah Catamaran and Songsern Express have air-conditioned buses that will take you right down to Chumphon Pier. Seats are noted to have a "slight recline" but are not sleeper seats. I would still recommend the overnight option. You can also take a train from Bangkok and Ferry to Koh Tao. This is the longest journey time, taking somewhere around 13 hours, but trains are very affordable and sleeper trains are recommended. Hua Lamphong Train Station in Bangkok is easy to reach with MRT (subway).
