Estes Park is just over 7,500 ft elevation. You may experience the effects of altitude sickness, such as headaches, tiredness, lack of appetite, and nausea. Altitude sickness may worsen with exercise and alcohol consumption. If you're not accustomed to the elevation, consider taking things a bit slower until you acclimate, and be sure to drink PLENTY of water throughout your stay.
In Estes Park in September, you can expect a high of 69ºF (20ºC) and a low of 41ºF (5ºC).
Mid-September to the beginning of October is generally the best time to catch the changing colors, as well as hear the elk bugling. Red and orange hues burst into color at different times, making it a truly amazing sight. The color change is influenced by the leaf’s pigments, length of nights, and weather. Trees at higher elevations begin turning in late August; the delightful golden color makes its way down the mountain reaching the trees at lower elevations in October.
One of the many wonderful things about Estes Park is the abundance of wildlife you can see in Rocky Mountain National Park (RMNP) as well as the wildlife that makes its way into the town limits. From chipmunks to mountain lions, there’s a plethora of Estes Park wildlife to see and photograph during your vacation, as well as birds, reptiles, and butterflies. Many of our guests enjoy seeing our bigger wildlife, sometimes from the comfort of their own cabin! It’s not hard to spot one of RMNP’s 3,000 elk, especially in the fall and spring for the mating and calving seasons. You’ll also want to keep your eyes peeled for a moose sighting! the moose are often found on the western side of the park or along Fall River Road. Moose have been coming into town more frequently, so you might be lucky with a downtown Estes Park moose sighting.
