Sacro Monte di Varese is a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage site featuring a scenic 2.5 km pathway with 14 beautifully decorated chapels leading to the Sanctuary of Santa Maria del Monte. Nestled in the hills above Varese, it offers stunning panoramic views and a rich blend of history, art, and spirituality. You can either park at the base of the mountain and hike up, or drive all the way up just to see the view.
Perched above Lake Maggiore, Rocca di Angera is a beautifully preserved medieval castle with breathtaking views of the lake and surrounding countryside. Once a fortress for the powerful Visconti family, today it’s known for its historic halls, stunning frescoes, and lush gardens. It’s a truly magical setting—full of history, charm, and unforgettable scenery.
Varese has a lake with wonderful views. If you are looking for a quick day trip, you can go see the lake (we recommend staying for sunset/golden hour times). While there are many lake access points that you can find on the website, these are the ones I go to most often: - Lido della Schiranna : via Canottieri 15 - 21100 Varese (VA) OR -Lido di Bodio (closer to hotel/wedding area): Largo Unesco, 21020 Bodio Lomnago VA, Italy
Another delicious bakery in the area.
This is the center of Varese, where you can walk around, eat, shop, and relax. Within Varese Centro, we strongly recommend visiting Giardini Estensi, which are a walkable distance from the center, and Villa Panza, a beautiful history villa with art exhibits and a gorgeous garden.
The Isole Borromee (Borromean Islands, ~1 hour drive from Varese) are a group of picturesque islands on Lake Maggiore, famous for their stunning palaces, lush botanical gardens, and charming historic villages. The three main islands—Isola Bella, Isola Madre, and Isola dei Pescatori—offer a mix of Baroque architecture, exotic plants, and traditional fishing culture.
Milan is only ~1:15 min train ride from Varese. You can take the train (see travel section) from Varese Nord station to Milan Centrale. Once you are there, you can travel around the city via subway. We recommend checking out the Duomo and Galleria areas. Careful to pickpockets in Milan!
