Hank

The first time I ever met Rachel she sprang across the room yelling “WAIT!!! You haven’t seen it??” She then proceeded to pull up a video called ‘Actual Cannibal Shia LaBeouf’. That was almost two years before our first date. During the Spring of 2017, Rachel was studying abroad in England, and we began to reconnect over my wisdom teeth surgery and Stranger Things. I knew that I liked her, but England was a little far for a relationship. So I decided to cool it a bit on the conversations until she got back to the US. Besides, I was taking a literature course over the summer, and Rachel is an English and Writing major, what a perfect wingman. So, in June I pretended to be a terrible writer who needed her help, which she was more than happy to provide. As we talked more I realized my feelings for her continued to grow. A couple of outings with her friends, a 4th of July barbecue, and a broken grill later, I decided to ask her on our very first date.

Rachel

So, flashing forward to the end of the summer... On August 2nd I came home from work, and my mom told me that I had a letter in the mail. She gave me an envelope that had my name and address in handwriting that I would soon come to recognize as Hank Pittman’s. I eagerly tore open the envelope, a little confused, a little hopeful, and very unprepared for what I was about to read. In a letter written on sailboat stationary that he apparently bought in the 10th grade, Hank expressed how excited he was for me to be back in Statesboro soon, wished me luck on my job interview coming up the following week, and thanked me for introducing him to the musical Hamilton. In addition to this letter, Hank had written some beautiful poems. For example: "You like cats, memes, and doggos too And I would like to have dinner with you." At this point, I was in shock. I read the lines over and over again, processing, checking to make sure the words were real. It sounded suspiciously...like he was asking me...on a date? The letter went on: "If’t be true thou art reading this, I hast undoubtedly fallen prey to thy charming personality, wit, and beauty. So Rachel, what do you say? May I court you further? May I take you to dinner soon?" And of course, I said yes.
