I (Victoria) had just gotten back from studying abroad in November of 2017, and I had decided to visit Messiah College's campus to catch up with friends, rather than waiting for the next semester to see everyone. I walked over to the building most of my friends had classes in: Boyer. Outside of Boyer stood a few of my really good friends...and this other guy I had heard of but hadn't met yet: Theo Camara. After chatting with the group for a few minutes, it was time for us all to get on with our days, so I started hugging my friends goodbye. I then reached Theo, and even though I had just met him, I decided it would be rude to leave him out of the goodbye hugs, so I told him I was going to hug him too and proceeded to do just that. Theo is not a hugger normally, so for him, this moment was a little awkward and strange. For me, however, this moment would end up being pretty pivotal because as I pulled back from our hug, I looked up into Theo's eyes for a brief second and something in me was stirred. As romantic as it sounds, I don't think I'd call it love at first sight, but I did have this deep sense within me that I was supposed to know Theo Camara. It just felt inevitable that we would be in each other's lives in some way from that point on. At least, it felt that way for me. For Theo, it was just a memorable moment because a stranger had hugged him (which, I admit, sounds a little creepy haha). But here we are! What started as a random hug has, inevitably (wink wink) become so much more! So for all of you singles out there, maybe try hugging strangers? Creepy? Maybe. Will it bring you your future spouse? Possibly!
A little backstory to this is that 25+ years ago, Wendy Morey and Michael Burley met while working crew for a hot air balloon company. Wendy thought Michael was hot...until he took over what she was doing. Michael felt bad about being late, so he tried to make up for it by getting right to work, and taking over the pretty woman's task. Somehow, despite this blunder, Wendy and Michael ended up hitting it off, getting married, and becoming parents to me, Victoria Burley. Because of my parents' adorable hot air balloon story, whenever I had dreamed of being proposed to, I had always hoped that somehow, even in the tiniest way, hot air balloons were incorporated. Theo did not disappoint! On January 5th, 2019, Theo had me meet him at Messiah College. He had planned to drive back from his winter break in CT that day, and we were going to go to Olive Garden that evening for date night. He had suggested we dress up, and I had thought nothing of it. I showed up around 5:00pm to campus, which also just so happened to be right at sunset (yeah, Theo thinks of everything. I'm pretty lucky). Outside of Boyer, the place where we first met, stood Theo with a bouquet of flowers (including a sunflower, the kind he gave me on our first date) in hand. Near him, the tree was decorated with yellow streamers (my favorite color) and hot air balloon lanterns. In front of the tree was a yellow sign with the words "Fly Away With Me" and the nickname Theo has for me, "Acorn", as well as pictures of other meaningful things in our relationship. Theo took my hand and gave me a romantic speech about our past nine months together, got down on one knee, and asked me to marry him! I said YES! That wasn't all he had planned though. He handed me a gift bag with some more goodies in it, and then we drove to Olive Garden, where I was met, to my surprise, by my family and his! It was truly the perfect proposal!
This article really helped Theo and Victoria during their first few months dating. For Theo, the fact that Victoria was a Yankees fan was ACTUALLY a major issue for him. Although it seems like a silly issue now, and they joke about it all the time, it was once a major barrier for him. This article helped him through it. It's a major part of their story, and describes their relationship (when it comes to baseball) almost perfectly. We even plan on naming our first dog Fenway! And with that, we will be naming our second dog Yogi, just to be fair to Victoria! The article is written by a girl who is a Yankees fan dating a man who is a Red Sox Fan: ARTICLE BELOW "One of my boyfriend’s favorite Red Sox came up to bat and, as he stood up to watch the swing, the unthinkable happened: I found myself rooting for the Red Sox. Not for a win, necessarily. Not for a grand slam or a home run or even a miraculous tie game. But in that moment, watching the boy who I once jumped backwards into a crosswalk just to wave hello to, I wanted to see him smile. Whatever it took. That means more than just compromise. The Red Sox-Yankees rivalry is, after all, one of respect. When Red Sox icon Johnny Pesky passed away earlier this week, the Yankees held a moment of silence in honor of the legend. We love to hate each other’s team because they give us the fun of watching a good game. They give us something to root for, something to love." https://thoughtcatalog.com/jillian-bevacqua/2012/08/dating-the-enemy-a-baseball-love-story/
