Question

Are there any safety tips or precautions I should be aware of in Rio de Janeiro?

Answer

• Stay in well-known and safe areas: Stick to popular tourist areas, such as Copacabana, Ipanema, and Leblon, which are generally considered safe for visitors. These areas tend to have a higher police presence and offer a range of amenities and services catering to tourists. • Be cautious with personal belongings: Like in any major city, it's important to be mindful of your personal belongings and avoid displaying valuable items in public. Keep your bags and belongings close to you, especially in crowded areas and public transportation. • Use reliable transportation: Opt for reputable transportation options such as registered taxis, ride-hailing apps like Uber, or private transfers arranged through your accommodation. Avoid hailing taxis on the street, and if you do, ensure they have a visible company logo and a working meter. • Be cautious at night: Exercise caution when venturing out at night, especially in less-frequented areas. Stick to well-lit and populated streets, and consider traveling in groups. It's generally advisable to avoid walking alone late at night, particularly in unfamiliar areas. • Avoid wearing flashy jewelry or displaying large amounts of cash, as this may attract unwanted attention.

Question

Are there any additional precautions I should take when using ATMs in Brazil?

Answer

Yes, it's always wise to exercise caution when using ATMs, especially in unfamiliar surroundings. Here are a few tips to enhance your security: • Choose ATMs located in well-lit, populated areas. • Shield your PIN entry to prevent others from seeing it. • Be vigilant of your surroundings and avoid displaying large amounts of cash. • If an ATM appears suspicious or tampered with, refrain from using it and notify the bank or local authorities. • Remember to consult your bank regarding any specific guidelines, restrictions, or recommendations they may have for international card usage in Brazil.

Question

What kind of outlets are there in Brazil and will I need an adaptor?

Answer

Yes! If your electronics have a two-pronged plug, like those used in the US and Canada, you'll need a Type A adaptor. If your electronics have a three-pronged plug, you'll need a Type B adaptor. Brazil has two types of outlets: Type A outlets have two flat prongs, while Type B outlets have two flat prongs and a round prong. It's a good idea to buy one before your trip to ensure you have it when you arrive in Brazil! Don't worry if you forget one, you can usually buy one at a local electronics store, ask the hotel reception, or reach out to Sam and Matt (we brought some extras).
