How We Met

Aaron's Version

The summer of 2020 was a weird one. Without any warning, I (Aaron) was called back to the Naval Academy to assist with a “Summer Task Force”. The Task force required that we take care of the incoming freshmen class, and insure to the best of our ability that no one get sick. Needless to say it was hard, and I definitely was a little down in the dumps. One day, one of my Academy friends named George, said I should join a dating app called “Hinge”, and he even made a profile for me. I was also motivated by my other good friend Jack, who said “ I did not have what it takes to get a girlfriend”. With new found determination, I joined this dating app and found Skylynn within 24 hours. We hit it off instantly, and I quickly asked for her number so I could FaceTime her ( to make sure she was real ). Our first FaceTime I was really nervous, but I found the courage to ask her out, and she said no (for now), since she was not in the area. However, fate was on our side, and she needed to take her car in, a Subaru Forester (which happened to be my first car) to a dealership in Fairfax. By some miracle, I was able to leave the Academy after task force, and we went on our first date July 19th 2020. It lasted 6 hours, and even ended with a kiss (let’s go). From there, we continued to talk, and just a few weeks later, I asked her to be my girlfriend. From the start, our relationship has been put through challenges due to conditions neither of us can control. However, that did and does not matter. We love each other, and nothing will ever change that.

How We Met

Skylynn’s Version

I had been on Hinge a few months before meeting Aaron with no luck. I actually saw Aaron's profile and thought he would never be interested in me. Thankfully he was and responded to one of my prompts. We started talking and clicked immediately, it didn't take him very long to ask for my number. Eventually, we set up a FaceTime call so that I could make sure Aaron wasn't a catfish. I had a good feeling about him after that call. It's true, I did say no to a date at first, I was in Roanoke at the time, but told him I would love to when I was back in town. Everything worked out and we were able to go on that date. Our first date lasted six hours and even then I didn't want it to end.

The Proposal

Skylynn’s Version

A little back story, our dating process was not “normal”. We were only an hour apart, but we had two separate six week periods where we couldn’t see each other. Plus many other things that made it hard to visit each other. So we had to work on our communication and get creative with virtual dates. I asked a friend, Madi, for advice on long distance relationships and she said “take it day by day”. So, I knew shortly after we started dating that this was going to be a forever thing. At first we would talk about how we each wanted to get married one day and slowly that conversation changed wanting to marry each other. During our second period of not being able to see each other we booked an Airbnb trip for the summer so we would have something to look forward to. I had been wondering if Aaron would propose then or while his mom and sister were meeting my family in Virginia. Turns out it was during our Airbnb trip. The second night we were there we had decided to dress up and make dinner. Aaron got dressed very quickly, went outside, and then asked me to join him. That’s when he asked me to be his wife and I said yes!! Aaron is sweet and cares really well for people, I am so excited to be his wife.

The Proposal

Aaron's Version

Sky and I had talked about getting married for several months leading up to the proposal. Due to the situation we had been subjected to, I knew that I could trust her and was ready to make my final move I would ever make on a woman that was not my wife. I had bought this Cinderella carriage ring box at Disneyland, and the entire week of the proposal I was placing it in plain sight in hopes that she would find it so I could propose on the spot. I thought that it would be more genuine if it was spontaneous. 5 days or so went by, and we found ourselves in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia on a weekend get-away. I grabbed the Cinderella carriage ring box with the ring inside, and told her I was going outside. I did not tell her for what, or how long I planned to be out there. About 20 Minutes or so passed, and she came outside and asked what I was doing. I invited her up to this gazebo, got on a knee, and asked if she wanted to marry me. She said yes, and the rest has been awesome since. Love you Sky!
