Sky, having just returned from Greece, walks into a local dive bar – the Town Pump – with her extended family. She wears her celestial dragon garb acquired from her recent travels, with no makeup, and her natural hair. For the Shaver family, it’s another normal Friday night. After some prodding at an El Porton dinner, they all agree to bring their best to karaoke night. Their favorite DJ, DJ Peppers, is working the booth again this Friday night. He already is a household name for the Shaver group. They take bets on what his first song will be. “Ain’t No Rest for the Wicked,” “Budapest,” and “Cover Me Up” are a few on the list. Sky quickly signs up to sing two songs, while her Nana signs up for “Delta Dawn,” her Dad for “Gangsta’s Paradise,” and cousins Micah, Ilana, and Haley sign up for “Teenage Dirtbag.” After her fantastic performance of “Fergalicious” and a few rounds of other singers, Sky starts to wonder if DJ Peppers is going to let her go on again. Were her sick dance moves and musicality too much for this emo boy? Was he upset with her jumping around on stage? She decides to approach the DJ booth to find out. Thinking that a change in song would get her back into his good graces, she asks him if she should perform “Redneck Woman” or an Evanescence song next? “Hmmm…. Evanescence,” he says. “Oh well of course you would say that - you with the gauges,” she replies, pointing to the holes in his ears. “And if I sang ‘Bring Me to Life’ I’d need a partner, and no one in my family knows these songs…. Could you sing it?” “I’ve already sang my songs tonight, I really don’t feel like singing again. We have a big list of people…” He says. “Well don’t commit to a no now, just make the call before I go on. No pressure, but I don’t have anyone else that could do the part.” She says before walking back to the table with her family. After many more singers go on, she mentions to the table that she is sure DJ Peppers is upset with her and doesn’t want her to perform anymore. Luckily, Micah snuck in a duo for them to sing - “The Black Parade.” However, the very next song is Sky’s. She didn’t have time for a break before “Bring Me To Life” flashed across the screens. Sky make eye contact with DJ Peppers, wondering if he did this on purpose, and if he is going to come join her. To her surprise, he does. And he *kills it.* "Holy snickerdoodles – this guy is talented." She thinks to herself while he sings her backup. After the song, she goes to sit down. Nana leans into her and says, “I think we just witnessed the beginning of something.” As they are leaving the bar, her whole family hypes her up to go get DJ Peppers’ number. She goes back to the DJ booth and smoothly says, “I like the gauges” as she hands him her phone. Never had she seen someone go quite so red in the face and giggle, as he gives her his number. She walks back outside to show off DJ Pepper’s number. “I think I just met my person,” she tells the group. And the rest, as they say, is history.
