A short road trip west of Mâcon takes you to one of medieval era’s greatest monasteries. Cluny Abbey was founded by monks who adhered to the Rule of Saint Benedict more strictly than anybody else, and so it became a prominent centre for the Benedictine order, influencing thousands of people in Western Europe.
The Solutré Museum presents the collections from one of the richest prehistoric sites in Europe. This was a hunting site used by men of the Middle and Upper Paleolithic Age, who came to hunt and smoke thousands of horses and reindeer. After getting to know the history of the rock at the Musée de Préhistoire de Solutré you can climb the rock.
This church was constructed in the 19th century and is almost in the centre of Macon. It is also very close to the tourist information centre. This overlooks a large square area with restaurants and is a good place to have a coffee.
