Things to Do in Marin and Mill Valley

Walk Among the Giants: Take a trip to Muir Woods National Monument to walk among ancient, towering redwood trees. Please note that online parking reservations are required. Scenic Lookouts: Drive to the Muir Beach Overlook for fantastic ocean views (if not foggy!) Top of Mount Tam: Expect slow-going, winding roads up to East Peak. Once at the parking lot near the summit, to reach the highest viewpoints on Mount Tamalpais’ East Peak with minimal effort, you can take a highly accessible 0.75-mile loop trail, followed by a short, steep climb to the historic fire lookout. These paths offer panoramic 360-degree views of the entire Bay Area. Mill Valley: Sip Local Coffee: Start your morning at Equator Coffees or Depot Café and Bookstore (located near Lytton Square), beloved local spots for great espresso and people-watching, then take a short walk to the Mill Valley Library and walk out on the back deck to look over the Redwood trees. The Mill Valley Market has soup and sandwiches to take to the square by the Depot for a quick lunch. Flour Craft Bakery at the Mill Valley Lumber Yard offers gluten free products and a place to shop or sit and have coffee. Explore the Redwoods: Take a walk at Cascade Falls. Distance: About 0.5 miles round-trip from parking lot to the top of the falls and back. You can extend it to 1.5 miles each way by starting from downtown's Old Mill Park or the Depot Cafe. Parking is very limited at the trailhead. If the immediate spaces are taken, street parking is available further up Cascade Drive. Marin Headlands Drive is located at the very south end of Marin County, with spots to pull over to see the Pacific Ocean, San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge. Tennessee Valley, between Sausalito and Mill Valley, has hiking trails to suit the whole family. The Tennessee Valley Trail is mostly level; it begins at the parking area and travels 1.7 miles to Tennessee Beach.

Tiburon

Main Street and Shoreline Park: Take a leisurely walk to enjoy panoramic views of the San Francisco skyline, the Golden Gate Bridge, and Angel Island from a sidewalk along the bay. Explore the Tiburon Waterfront Dining Scene: Relax with bayside cocktails and fresh seafood at an old hangout, Sam's Anchor Cafe. Ride the Tiburon Ferry to Angel Island: Take the Angel Island-Tiburon Ferry over to Angel Island State Park for wonderful total bay views and hiking trails and historical tours. Take the Golden Gate Ferry from downtown Tiburon or downtown Sausalito to San Francisco's Ferry Building. There is also a ferry that leaves from Larkspur. Starting directly from the San Francisco Ferry Building, you can embark on the Big Art Loop. This public art trail stretches along the Embarcadero Promenade and features monumental, large-scale sculptures ranging from 12 to 55 feet tall. Near Tiburon is the Cove Shopping Center: Great little strip mall with a bakery, Jane/Marin, an upper end grocery store called Nugget Markets, Peet's Coffee and Tea, and a couple of restaurants (Via Piccola Trattoria and Troya Mediterranean Tiburon).

Travel Note

Sausalito and Dining in Southern Marin

Sausalito: Stroll the Bridgeway Promenade for sweeping San Francisco views, exploring the eclectic Floating Homes (houseboats) Community at Waldo Point Harbor, and grab fresh local seafood at waterfront dining spots like Fish or Le Garage Sausalito | Waterfront French Bistro. Dining in Southern Marin: Grab a bite at classic Marin favorites like the Buckeye Roadhouse; Hook Fish at Proof Lab, 254 Shoreline Hwy, Mill Valley; The Junction, 226 Shoreline Highway, Mill Valley, for beer and pizza outdoors, unless the fog is in.

Fairfax Area

Marin Museum of Bicycling: Check out this local, volunteer-run cultural center which also houses the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame. Grab a Drink: Walk by the dirt caked bikes hanging on the wall and hang with some tough, hard-bitten riders fresh off the trails of Mt Tam at Gestalt Haus; beer and brats.
