Ultimately, love is patient - but we are not. We love to host a celebration, and we realized that the kind of wedding we wanted to have likely would not be possible for a few more years due to other obligations. In the meantime, we realized we didn't want to wait to have a bigger, more traditional wedding to be married to each other. After lots of discussion (so much discussion), we ultimately decided that marrying ourselves at a location full of meaning for us both was right for us.
Yes! In the District of Columbia and 7 other U.S. states, individuals can self-officiate their wedding. Under a "Friends" or a "Quaker" union, couples in these jurisdictions are permitted to self-unite without a middleman, such as a priest, formal officiant, or judge.
Actually, no. In the District of Columbia, couples must declare an officiant when applying for a marriage license. Unable to decide who should be our officiant, we flipped a coin in the basement of the courthouse. Dana won the coin toss and was officially our officiant.
So many parties! There will be Halloween parties, 4th of July parties, New Year's Eve parties, birthday parties, and parties just because. But will there be a wedding party? We hope so! For now, we are taking this time to enjoy being married to each other, and we do sincerely hope to celebrate with you in the future.
