Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) for UK
As of January 8, 2025, the United Kingdom has implemented a new entry requirement for travelers from visa-exempt countries, including U.S. citizens. Visitors must now obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before their trip. The application process is straightforward, can be completed online or via the “UK ETA” mobile app, and costs £10 (approximately $12). The ETA is valid for two years and allows multiple entries into the UK for stays up to six months for purposes such as tourism, visiting relatives, business, or short-term study.  Similarly, the European Union is introducing the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) for visa-exempt travelers, including U.S. citizens. While the exact implementation date has been subject to delays, ETIAS is expected to become operational in mid-2025. Once in effect, travelers will need to apply online for authorization before visiting most European countries. The application process involves providing personal information and passport details, and approval is typically granted within minutes. The authorization will be valid for three years or until the passport expires, whichever comes first, and will allow stays of up to 90 days within any 180-day period.  It’s important to note that these authorizations are not visas but are mandatory for entry. Travelers should apply for the necessary authorizations well in advance of their trips to ensure compliance with the new regulations.
