What to Expect When Traveling to Cairo, Egypt

Welcome to Cairo, the bustling capital of Egypt! Here are a few tips to help you prepare for your trip: - Language & Culture: Arabic is the primary language of Egypt. Most locals do not speak English fluently, so traveling in groups or with someone who speaks Arabic would be helpful. - Currency and Payment: Egyptian Pounds (EGP) is the official currency of Egypt. Currency exchange is available on arrival at the Cairo Int'l Airport. VISA credit cards are widely accepted, but make sure you notify your bank of upcoming travel. Other non-VISA credit cards are less accepted. If you're bringing American cash bring the blue stripped 100 dollar bills because those are the easiest to exchange. - Traffic Chaos: Cairo's streets are lively and unpredictable. Be ready for honking horns and daring drivers. Use ride-hailing apps like Uber for safer transportation. - Amazing Food: Try local dishes like "koshari" (a mix of rice, lentils, and pasta), "ful" (fava beans), and "taameya" (Egyptian falafel). - Cultural Dress: Modest clothing is appreciated, especially in mosques or traditional neighborhoods. - Friendly Locals: Egyptians are warm and welcoming! Don't be surprised if strangers offer tea or strike up conversations. - Tipping Culture: Tipping (called "baksheesh") is common, even for small services like opening a door or giving directions. Try to have small Egyptian bills ready. - Desert Heat: Pack light, breathable clothes, but also bring layers for cooler evenings or air-conditioned spaces. Cairo is a vibrant mix of ancient history and modern energy, so embrace the chaos and enjoy the adventure!
