How We Met

09/02/23

Being from the small town of Waterbury, Courtney and Chris had always known of each other—but didn’t really know each other. Courtney had even gone to school with and played a season of softball alongside Chris’s younger sister, Katie. Still, their paths never truly crossed…until fate had other plans. A few years later, they both found themselves invited to the same End of Summer Party hosted by one of Courtney’s best friends, Casey, and her now husband Kyle, at their new home. What Courtney didn’t realize was that Casey and Chris had grown up together. In fact, they were born just a month apart, and their moms had been best friends for years! Courtney had recently become single, and while she was catching up with Katie at the party, she caught Chris’s eye. As the afternoon went on, Casey quietly let Courtney know that Chris wanted to ask her out—but was feeling a little shy about it. From that point on, the flirting began. They bonded over their shared love of cooking, Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, the many people they both knew, and the familiar local places they realized they’d both frequented for years. As Katie tried to wrangle her older brother—who she felt was seriously lacking in game—Chris spotted Courtney racing kids through a bouncy house obstacle course (because of course there was one at a Casey Magee party). Chris walked over and asked, “Who’s next?” Without missing a beat, Courtney replied, “Looks like you—you’re up next!” Chris laughed and claimed he was probably too old for that, but he’d give it a try. Then he added, “Let’s make it interesting. If I win, I get your number so I can take you out sometime. If you win, you can kick me to the curb.” Courtney laughed, reached out her hand, and said, “Deal.” And they shook on it. To this day, Chris insists he let Courtney win as part of his master plan to win her over. Those who know him best know how competitive he is…so the truth may remain a mystery. After climbing out of the bouncy house and brushing grass off their clothes, they shared a laugh. Chris then said, “I know we had a deal, but how about this—I’ll give you my number. If you’d ever like to go to dinner or grab a drink, I’d love that… but only if you’re ready.” Courtney agreed and saved his number. They were texting before the end of the night. About a week later, they went on their first date—sharing drinks and appetizers at McGillicuddy's in Williston. And from that day on, they’ve never been apart.
