Garrett and Shelley met when they were students at Clemson University. While enrolled in PES 2020, or better known as "Soils," a friendship was born through a study group they were both a part of. After Garrett graduated, he took a position working for Clemson University's Shooting Sports Program and taught shotgun classes at the university. The two remained friends and often worked together with different student organizations. During Shelley's senior year, she decided she was going to take Garrett's class since she had free time before starting her Master's. From there, they quickly realized that they would rather be more than just friends, and Shelley dropped the class before the spring semester.
