Built in 1870, the Old Idaho Penitentiary is one of only four territorial prisons open to the public today. During its 101 years of operation, the site saw escapes, scandals and the effects of Boise’s transition from the “wild west” to a mid-20th century capital city. Step inside the four walls of the prison yard and imagine a life of confinement as steel doors close behind you.
Near the Old Penitentiary - In 1984, The Idaho Botanical Garden was established on a 32-acre site of old prison grounds leased from the Idaho State Historical Society and the State of Idaho. The Garden founders and board built an irrigation system, nature trails, and planted two acres, including the Meditation, Rose and Herb Gardens. Since then, the Garden has gradually expanded to become the awe-inspiring destination it is today.
In 2002, the first drawing was created on the back alley doorway of Moon's Cafe. Now, the murals and graffiti-inspired artwork extend well beyond the single doorway; artwork can be seen throughout the entire alley. Artists add new works of art every year, creating an ever growing and changing experience. Each summer a large painting event is held which allows artists and community members to be apart of the Freak Alley Gallery as it transforms.
