Grandfather Mountain State Park, one of North Carolina's newest, covers 2456 acres of the Blue Ridge's highest peak. The mountain for which the Park is named is one of the most easily recognized and spectacular in the Appalachian range, and reaches nearly 6000 ft in elevation. It's also a ten minute drive from Banner Elk and has stunning views from it's swinging bridge.

If you're looking for a little more than a one stoplight downtown, Boone is the place to visit. Full of great places to eat, shopping, home to Appalachian State University and just a 20-30 min drive from Banner Elk, Boone is an excellent place to grab brunch on your way out or stock up on ski or mountain gear for the next season.
Only open to the public during the summer season, Beech Mountain is home to one of the most unique amusement parks out there. The Land of Oz is exactly what it sounds like... it even has the yellow brick road.
