Long answer: Ian and Shelby had Spanish class together in ninth grade. Shelby secretly had a crush on him, but they never spoke. Ian and Shelby had Biology class together in tenth grade. They texted and went out on one date before dissipating away. Years later, Ian came into Sheetz for a bathroom break and ran into Shelby stocking cups. They struck up a conversation and exchanged information. A week later, their first date. Four dates later, their first kiss. On August 14, 2016 they first called themselves a couple.
Ian had decided he would propose as soon as Shelby finished her Master's degree. The trouble was that Shelby got her degree in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic. "It's pretty hard to arrange a proposal when every dine-in restaurant is closed and it's freezing cold outside," Ian said. With a little extra effort, however, he was able to reserve a heated private igloo at the Bayfront Bar and Grill overlooking Lake Erie. They spent the day shopping and sight-seeing in Erie and finished off with a romantic dinner in their igloo. Ian was so nervous that he knocked over his glass of champagne as soon as we sat down, but he pulled it together to deliver a perfect speech, getting down on one knee, and revealing the ring.
