Although Shelby and Edwin both grew up in West Liberty, they didn't truly meet until the summer of 2010. Shelby, going into her sophomore year, was invited on a trip to Lake Macbride by her close friend Jesse. Curious as to who was going, Jesse listed a few common friends and Edwin. She had no idea who Edwin was but she quickly found out. He ultimately ended up "flirting" with her by kicking sand at her while she sun bathed (he was 16 at the time, cut him some slack). Miraculously, she ended up continuing to talk to Edwin after that trip which ended up with them dating a few months later.
Before we get into the proposal, we must first tell you about the "not proposal". We had dated for 9 years, so Edwin was loooong overdue on proposing :) The not proposal - A year prior to proposing, we road tripped to Bozeman, Montana. On our last day there, we went to relax at the hot springs where there was a live music event. Nestled in between beautiful mountains and the musician playing a mix of romantic hits, it hit Edwin: "this would have been a perfect spot to propose". To make matters worse, the musician ended up playing "Marry You" by Bruno Mars, and this is where Edwin turned to Shelby and blurted out "Shit, I'm sorry, I don't have a ring!". Soon after we returned to Iowa City, Edwin secretly began searching for a ring. The proposal - After dating for 9 years, it seemed that Shelby was always on her toes expecting Edwin to propose any second. Because of this, Edwin wanted to make sure it was still a surprise. After losing faith that Edwin would ever propose, we planned a trip for us to spend New Year's Eve in Minneapolis. There, Edwin planned to propose at an outdoor ice skating rink while they played "our song". Unfortunately, this went a lot smoother in his head than in person. He remembered himself a far more graceful ice skater than he really was. He ultimately abandoned his plan as he was worried he would not be able to stand back up after getting down on one knee. Fortunately, he had a backup plan. We ended up going to Minnehaha Falls, which is a beautiful water fall that partially freezes over in the winter. With a stunning frozen backdrop and many sweet words, he FINALLY proposed!
