The Engagement Story

4.6.2018

I knew since the Winter 2017 that I wanted to change Jacqueline’s last name and marry her. I kept looking at my calendar over and over thinking about our future and figuring out when the best time to propose would be. The spring of 2018 was incredible busy with Jacqueline finishing up SGA and graduating, and me heading toward my senior year. I circled the Friday of A-Day weekend, knowing that we would have lots of family and friends staying in town to celebrate. I framed the whole story around a surprise triple date that weekend with some of our best friends, which drove Jacqueline crazy. Around 1 PM on the Friday we got engaged, I shared with Jacqueline that we had gotten a clocktower tour of Samford Hall. This is something she had always wanted to do, so I figured what better way to start off a date night? When I rolled up to her house to get her, for the 4:00 pm tour, I was struggling to have words to say. She opened the door and the first question she asked, “Why is your shirt untucked? Tuck your shirt in!” Little did she know that I had my shirt untucked to cover up the ring box that was in my pants back pocket. My excuse was that I was hot and had just gotten out of the shower, and I needed to cool off. Jacqueline didn’t buy it, but I proceeded to let her in the car and tucked my shirt in. Nervously sweating bullets and scrambling to play it cool, we drove over to Samford Hall and waited for ours friends. As we made the journey up to the top of the tower while learning the history, I was nodding excessively, to avoid speaking which would lead to a nervous babble. Finally, what seemed like the longest 10 minutes of my life – we had made it to the top. We were in awe of the beauty of Auburn while standing in of the most historic places overlooking the campus that we had spent many years serving. Our friends instructed us to pose for a picture, which was my cue to take a knee. All I remember is seeing her cry and saying yes. But that is all a man needs!
