Shea and Juan met at the Asbury Park St. Patrick's Day Parade. Shea tagged along with her best friend (Dana Morton) to a law clerk gathering, while Juan attended stag and sober due to his Lenten sacrifice of alcohol. They spent the day bar hopping, but it was Selection Sunday, so Juan did not come out of his shell to Shea much until the evening, after the Selection Show had ended. An intoxicated Shea left early, and a fellow law clerk asked Juan why he didn't get "those digits." Juan, confidently, remarked that he knew he would see her again...
Juan left work early to set the scene at the apartment that he and Shea had shared for little more than two weeks. He decorated the space with tealight candles and adorned the table with white roses and a gourmet dinner of microwaved broccoli and Kraft macaroni and cheese, paired with Love Noir wine. Then he waited...and waited...and waited...and waited...until Shea returned home from work, having stayed late. When she arrived home she found Juan playing the organ, after which he serenaded her with a rendition of Bob Dylan's 'Lay Lady Lay.' It wasn't long before Shea realized that this was more than just a romantic gesture, confirmed by Juan getting down on one knee and Shea said "Yes!"
