Where A Soul Meets Body

As unlikely as a story as it may seem, it was love at first sight. It was one of the first Spring days where it was warm enough to go swimming and grill hamburgers outside, so that’s what both of us did. Neither one of us knew the other, but we knew of each other. Unbeknownst to either of us that day at Canyon Lake, hanging out with mutual friends (and lovers, yikes), in a beautiful part of the world where neither of us are from—we had found what we were each, individually, looking for: A Life Partner. It took almost a month for us to finally get together. The day I knew I loved Ed Carney was when he gave me a ride to the Lake by myself because I asked him, and I found a turtle there that kept me company for hours. I was talking to that turtle saying, “No offense, but I wish he was here with me right now instead of you.” Every day, as we texted and progressed to phone calls, we shared our war stories—both figuratively and literally, for him. We shared the qualities about ourselves that everyone else hates but we, in fact, love about each other. We shared our accomplishments, both big and small, and patted each other on the backs for them because no one else will, as Life is unfair like that. We talked about the value of loving ourselves, first and foremost. We talked about the past as it came up, but mostly, we talked about Rocks. And Science. And the Future. We talked about how useless it is to dwell on what happens after our bodies die, and about what a waste of Earthly time it is to worry about where our Souls go, one day. We talked about marriage almost immediately.
