Travel Note

San Miguel de Allende

Founded in 1542 by a Franciscan monk, San Miguel de Allende began as a quiet mission town strategically located on the silver trade route between Zacatecas and Mexico City. It was later named in honor of Ignacio Allende, a local hero and key figure in Mexico’s War of Independence. His role in the rebellion earned San Miguel its full name and a proud place in national history. By the mid-20th century, San Miguel had faded into relative obscurity—until artists and expats rediscovered its colonial beauty, vibrant culture, and near-perfect weather. Since then, it has transformed into a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beloved cultural destinations in Mexico. Fun Facts: San Miguel de Allende is home to the Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, a pink neo-Gothic church that looks like it belongs in a fairytale—designed by a self-taught indigenous stonemason using postcards of European cathedrals as inspiration. The city is a magnet for artists and creatives—so much so that it was once called "the Florence of Mexico." Whether you're here for the history, the food, or just the vibe, one thing’s for sure: San Miguel makes an unforgettable impression.
