Brave New World

A dart throw on a map landed Grace in Toronto

I had just picked up Grace for our first date. Sushi dinner in North York. Conversation starts slow but natural; it didn't take long for my goofiness to crack a smile out of her. "Taiwan has flying cockroaches, right?". I didn't know much about Taiwan, except that Jay Chou and boba tea originated from there, but we talked and talked about her story - how she ended up here and where she was going next. I wasn't sure if it was naivety or fearlessness, but Grace believed something needed to change in her life, and was brave enough to make the decision to move across the world to a foreign country she's never been to. I was in awe of her courageous decision, and her fun attitude piqued my interest, so we began hanging out a lot. Two weeks into dating, I asked her out of the blue to take a trip with me. "Where to?", she asked. "Banff, Alberta", was my response. She thought about it for a second or two, and said, "Sure, why not? Sounds fun." I'm not sure she knew where Banff was, let alone if Alberta was in Canada, but she trusted me. We planned the trip as strangers, but came home as a couple. Grace's attitude and ambition drove me ultimately to decide to move down to Atlanta. I was provided a great work opportunity, and Grace encouraged me to take this chance to learn and grow, to see a new part of the world, and to have fun along the way. Problem was, if she wanted to come as well, we would have to get married. And just like every dilemma that Grace faces, she took a second or two, and said "Sure, let's get married."
