Shawna started working in the Operating Room at Banner Desert in November of 2022. Early the next year, she met a quiet, respectful, and genuinely kind surgeon named Mark. Their paths crossed whenever she was assigned as the circulating nurse in his room. Mark was always calm, professional, and focused on his patients—but there was something about his demeanor and the way he treated everyone around him that immediately intrigued Shawna. Before long, whenever Shawna saw Mark’s name on the surgery board, she would jokingly announce, “My future husband is here!” Her coworkers would laugh, and it quickly became a running joke in the OR—until it wasn’t. A few weeks later, during their next encounter, Mark finally caught on to Shawna’s playful scheme. Instead of being put off, he was impressed—and asked her if she’d like to go fishing sometime. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and go after what you want—and Shawna’s little plan turned out better than she could have imagined.
