Our Story

Where professionalism met persistence — and love won.

Shawna started working in the Operating Room at Banner Desert in November of 2022. Early the next year, she met a quiet, respectful, and genuinely kind surgeon named Mark. Their paths crossed whenever she was assigned as the circulating nurse in his room. Mark was always calm, professional, and focused on his patients—but there was something about his demeanor and the way he treated everyone around him that immediately intrigued Shawna. Before long, whenever Shawna saw Mark’s name on the surgery board, she would jokingly announce, “My future husband is here!” Her coworkers would laugh, and it quickly became a running joke in the OR—until it wasn’t. One night, while working a late shift with a dear friend who had injured her knee, Shawna saw that Mark was still operating in the OR. Deciding it was time to make her move, she and her friend came up with a (mostly harmless) plan. She called Mark after his surgery, saying there was a nurse who needed a quick look at her ankle—not her actual knee injury—because it appeared swollen. Mark, being the kind and dedicated physician he is, came by without hesitation. That visit turned into hours of easy conversation in the office, and although they exchanged only a little personal information that night, something special had begun. A few weeks later, during their next encounter, Mark finally caught on to Shawna’s playful scheme. Instead of being put off, he was impressed—and asked her if she’d like to go fishing sometime. Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and go after what you want—and Shawna’s little plan turned out better than she could have imagined. From that moment on, the “future husband” joke became reality, and the rest is future.
