In 1816, the eastern end of the lot was sold to Charles Ellis. Mr. Ellis’ home stood across from these lots at the corner of Second Street and he used the land as a garden which was known for its beautiful roses, jasmine, and linden trees. In 1811, Elizabeth Poe, an actress performing in a traveling company at the Richmond Theater, became ill and died, leaving two young children orphaned. Mr. and Mrs. John Allan raised her son Edgar Poe and gave him Allan for his middle name. It was in these gardens that Edgar Allan Poe played with the Ellis children. Local legend has it that the enchanted garden is the one that Poe mentions in his famous poem “To Helen.” Historians have also noted that young Poe first courted his life-long love, Elmira Royster, in the garden where the Linden Row Inn now stands. The Linden Row Inn is roughly a 10 minute car ride from our Ceremony location at The Poe Museum. *No special room block/rate*

In 1842, a young Louis Rueger emigrated from Germany to Richmond, opening a saloon and café on Broad Street. His business thrived until the Civil War, when martial law was declared and his building was seized, to be used as the Commodore of the Confederate Navy's headquarters. Rueger travelled back to his native Germany during the war, returning to Richmond after five years to find his beloved Rueger's destroyed, a casualty of the great fire of 1865. Rueger's grandson, William, had even bigger dreams and in 1912 announced the impending construction of what was to become the new Hotel Rueger, opening in the current building in 1913. The Commonwealth features art, photography, furniture, accents, and décor that create a true Richmond experience. Located across from the Virginia State Capitol, The Commonwealth is only a 5 minute car ride from our Ceremony location. *No special room block/rate*

There are a number of wonderful Air BnB options within a 6 mile radius of the venue. We recommend staying in the following districts: Carytown, Museum District. For a more traditional and hip Richmond experience look for options in these districts: The Fan, Shockoe Bottom, Church Hill, Downtown. Airbnb has a huge database of places to stay and they range from the basic to the downright fancy. Airbnbs work particularly well for groups traveling together or even a solo traveler looking for a more local experience. Airbnb gives you the opportunity to rent an entire home or even a room in a shared space and pay by the night, rather than per person. This usually works out a lot cheaper for big groups. Having your own space (possibly even full-stocked kitchen, living room, etc) also provides you with a lot more freedom to relax, enjoy each-others’ company, and of course cater for yourself. *No special room block/rate*
