Jesse and I met in 2011 at UTEP. We were both students involved in the Honors Program and it was anything but love at first sight. I didn't like the way he dressed or his love of hats and he thought I was too bossy. After 2012 our paths separated. He stayed in El Paso and I moved to New York. It wasn't until 2017 when we would meet again. I moved back to Texas and was struggling to find work so I turned back to the Honors Program and helped plan an alumni event. While I was there I was invited to go on a trip to Houston with ONE, an organization co-founded by Bono to stop extreme poverty and preventable diseases. We would go as a group to Houston to attend a U2 concert and raise awareness. Last minute, some people dropped out and it ended up being just Jesse and I in a car on the way to Houston for 12 hours. Obviously, it went well. The 12 hours passed quickly and I found myself wishing we had more time together. The rest of the weekend we found ourselves finding excuses to separate ourselves from the rest of the group and find more time together. By the time we got back to El Paso, I knew he was the one. When I had agreed to caravan to Houston I expected to drive a full car of people for twelve hours and when it turned out it was just Shannon, I was pleasantly surprised. It had been about five years since we last spoke and even then we were never close but I was curious about how it was like living in New York. They say time flies when you are having fun, but when you're with someone special there is no such thing as seconds or minutes it just becomes a moment and that trip became our first moment. As the trip went on my heart caught on before my brain as to how much I really liked Shannon. I found myself doing and saying things without giving it a thought. I realized soon enough U2 is great and all but I just really want to spend all my time with her. As we drove back to El Paso I took a chance and asked her on date. The rest is, as they say, history.
