It was the summer before my Sr. year at JFK. Adolph was a freshman at XU. The hottest summer weather and concert were upon us. My girls and I were dressed to kill! I had on my white En Vogue body dress with my red pumps. We hit the concert and were moving around boy watching and not paying any attention to Public Enemy or Dougie Fresh. There was this mob of dudes coming our way...about 20 of them!!! We hit the middle and this tall, baby-faced stud caught my eye! I said... "ohh he is cute" and someone said.. "say Dolph....this one says you cute!!" He came over and said.. "hey"...and I said "hey"! We all ended up at Shoney's and all I remember was that he poured catsup all over everything on his plate!! We became an item and jet set across the city that Summer in Big Dolph's yellow van. We went everywhere together..just like NOW. We broke up the next summer right before my freshman year at Xavier.
SO....He married...twice...I married once. In there were lots of houses, a few dogs, one cat and four kids! Our families have always been intertwined...even before we were born!! Our mothers grew up right next door to one another and my Grandmother taught Ms. Syble how to cook! They grew up and moved away to raise their own families but the ties were already made. We would probably consider one another cousins had we not dated before we knew the connection. And then...his cousin Deany (more like a brother) married one of my best friends, Demi. By the way we set them up in high school and they went to the prom together as well. they broke up and also reunited. Happily married for 12 years now! So we saw one another off and on, spoke and kept it movin. It was a family gathering and something different was happening between us this time. Lots of teeth and eye contact...laughs of course.. jokes inevitable! A few weeks later I received a message from Adolph and ever since....we have been like "velcro" without apologies.
It was my birthday and both of our Birthday Celebrations that night. Adolph's birthday is 3 days after mine. I know..i know...we really are meant to be!! So.. we planned a dinner with our family and friends...as we always do. Nothing out of the ordinary right....? I made it home before he did and I called and he didn't answer and that never happens! He called back and said he had a stop to make and he would be there shortly. Well ok... it IS my birthday. Maybe he's getting my gift. He has already sent me a gorgeous floral arrangement...so he must be picking up my gift. Anyhoo...I got dressed, he came home and got dressed and we hit the road. Demi planned dinner in a space that I adored and Black Love was in effect. We were eating and drinking and laughing. I was posting and he oddly announced that he was tired of me calling him MY BOYFRIEND. I glanced at him sideways and continued with my post. He pushed his chair away and got down on one knee at the head of the table and said "I don't want to be your boyfriend anymore, I was wondering if you would be MY WIFE"! My body slid in the opposite direction (on top of Sherell) with my hands over my mouth in shock. She pushed me and I hopped back down towards him screeching.....YES..YES..YES....!!!!! It was the best proposal! He got me! I'm still SMILING...#meant2b
