We've planned our vow renewal to be an intimate affair with only parents, siblings, and a handful of special friends in attendance.
Shane and Cheryl met on Wenner Drive in Brunswick, Maryland where they neighbors - 3 doors apart. Shane was about 14 and Cheryl 13. Cheryl had a new skateboard - they were all the rage in the 90s grunge era - and decided to try it out. Shane happened to be in his front yard at the time, getting ready to walk to the Brunswick shopping center. He was intrigued by the girl with the skateboard and decided to watch her skate. Having no skateboarding experience whatsoever, Cheryl went to the top of the hill and took off. As you can imagine, that wasn't a good idea. She flew down the hill and, terrified, tried to jump off the skateboard, only to tumble on the asphalt and get horrible road rash. Shane thought this was hilarious and proceeded to laugh hard and loud, thus infuriating his future bride. (In his defense, he did ask if she was okay in between guffaws.) Cheryl, bleeding and irritated, gathered her skateboard and stomped into her house. Despite the fall, Shane was impressed and decided he wanted to get to know this girl. The rest is history - long talks on their front stoops, cuddling at the bus stop, walking the halls of Brunswick High together, homecoming and prom. They were hooked. Shane still chuckles when he thinks of that day. And Cheryl still has scars on her knees from the fall - a permanent reminder of the day their paths crossed and lives changed forever.
