Our love story

Shay’s Version: I caught Jacob's eye in 2017. Jacob first reached out to me on Facebook messenger where we briefly conversed, but that was about it. We went on to live our lives and in January 2019 he decided to shoot his shot once more. This time he was pleasantly surprised that I also expressed interest. I was living in Houston at the time and Jacob was living in Dallas, but we made the six months of long distance work. There were countless nights of Facetime dates, where we both would fall asleep together. Once a month, we would both take turns to go spend the weekend with one another and we remained intentional in expressing our wants and needs throughout the dating process. I moved back home to Dallas in August of 2019, and we became inseparable. Fast forward to the proposal, I thought my 30th birthday was going to be a regular birthday celebration and him proposing did not even cross my mind! I had planned my birthday evening with him, my sister and friends at a restaurant of my choice. He vaguely told me what our plans were earlier that day but that was it. I did notice that he seemed “off” that night before but didn’t think much into it. The next morning (my birthday) I got dressed for the plans he had and was pleasantly surprised by the gondola ride. Once the gondola ride was over, I did not expect to be surrounded by family and friends and him asking for my hand in marriage. Now here we are planning our dream wedding to spend the rest of our lives together. Jacob’s Version: It goes down in the DM. I first reached out to Shay in 2017 on Facebook, after she caught my eye and initially thought I may have known her. We briefly messaged each other but nothing further. In January 2019, I again shot my shot at Shay and this time made the basket. Shay and I went from IG messaging to texting and calling one another. In late January, Shay visited home and I took her on their first date to the Cheesecake Factory. The very next day they went on another date to Red Claws because seafood is life. On February 15, 2019, I drove to Houston to ask Shay to be his girlfriend and she said yes. At the time, Shay was living in Houston while I lived in Dallas. While the distance was a factor in their relationship, Shay and I made the most of it by having FaceTime dates and visiting each other once a month. In August 2019, Shay moved back to Dallas and they both made up for lost time and distance. In the short amount of time together, I knew that I found my Hip Hop. In December 2019, I purchased a ring to propose in Summer 2020. The Pandemic however caused me to push back the initial proposal date. I understood how important it was for Shay to have her close family and friends at the proposal to witness such an event. In 2021, I realized that the Pandemic was not going anywhere, but I did not want to hold the engagement ring any longer. With the help of family and friends, I decided to propose to Shay on her 30th birthday (September 11, 2021). Shay had no idea I was putting a ring on it that day. Now that I have found my Hip Hop, I want to hold on to it forever and never let it go.
