Caitlyn went to Verizon Wireless in Pittsford one morning. While browsing, her salesperson, Shane approached her to see if she needed assistance. For him, it was love at first sight. For her, she was irritated that it took all day for him to set up her phone. He gave her his business card with his personal number on the back stating "if you need anything, please call me." The rest of the evening, Caitlyn spent time thinking about their interaction and how funny Shane was. Shane spent the evening, writing Caitlyn's number down to contact her in case she didn’t contact him. To his surprise, she asked him for coffee. The two enjoyed their coffee, walked and sat on a bench where Shane realized he was going to spend the rest of his life with her. The rest is history!
It’s amazing to think Caitlyn had grown up in New York State and had yet to see The Big Apple. This was the thought Shane bounced around his head one morning laying in bed. Her favorite shows (Friends, Gossip Girl, Broad City) along with some of her favorite movies (Serendipity, You’ve Got Mail, Breakfast at Tiffany’s) all take place in New York City. With an engagement ring burning a hole in the bottom of his tie box he decided that there would be no better place to ask Caitlyn to marry him. That morning he booked a hotel overlooking Times Square. He planned surprises for his future fiancé all day long culminating in a proposal atop the Empire State Building. The whole day was perfect. Brunch at Serendipity, a trip to Dylan’s Candy and Central Park, a stroll down 5th Avenue and dinner at Aldo Sohm. Over a plate of Lamb and a glass of Beaujolais, Shane revealed to Caitlyn that she was about to see Romeo and Juliet at the New York City Ballet. On the way to the Empire State Building, Shane noticed something strange about Caitlyn. She had a profound look and a complexion turned green like a cartoon character. The Noro Virus Caitlyn had been fearlessly defending her memory care residents from had struck. Moments before the planned proposal, Shane realized his best laid plans had gone astray. In the next 18 hours Caitlyn made friends with some porcelain, slept and learned more about curling (2018 Winter Olympics). The next day, after a trip to the hospital, she was ready to take on the city once again. The new plan was to go to the top of the Empire State Building that night. With the snow falling, the guy at the ticket booth tried to convince them not to go up due to no visibility but Shane was persistent! With no other tourists, Shane took a chance and asked one of the security guards if he could record the proposal which he happily obliged. Surprisingly, Caitlyn said yes and on the North East corner of the Empire State Building they were engaged!
