Finding a First Mate

What's a pirate's favorite letter?

Jason and Emily met at the Census Bureau where they were both lowly IBM consultants at the bottom rungs of the corporate ladder. They bonded over the close-talking, odd-smelling coworker who Jason deliberately sent over to Emily's desk to torture her with inane questions. They ate Subway sandwiches together in the expansive Census Bureau parking lot. It was very scenic in Suitland, MD if you didn't mind the bulletproof glass or the drive-thru liquor store. Emily always had after-work events to attend, and Jason often had reason to find himself nearby. After developing a close friendship over the course of several months, Jason invited Emily and a coworker to his neighborhood haunt, Foster's Grille where he proceeded to ask the funniest joke Emily had ever heard. "What's a pirate's favorite letter?" he asked. "RRrrrrr," she said. "No, it's the C!" said Jason. And that ladies and gentleman, is how Jason earned himself a first date.

Sweet potatoes have many uses

On a hot New York Monday, Jason finally decided that today was the day. After 6 years he was finally going to ask Emily the big question. He casually asked her what she wanted for dinner early that morning. “Chicken,” she said. Okay, no way to mess up chicken, you can do this. When Jason stepped outside he realized there was no way he was going to be able to get everything he needed on foot. It was too hot and he had too many places to go. He had to use CitiBike. It was a risk that Emily would suspect something was off when her app kept pinging her throughout the day of my unusual trips around Brooklyn. Several hours later, drenched in sweat, Jason was on his way back home with his arms full of food, wine, flowers, and most importantly the ring. His heart was racing and hands were shaking while preparing dinner, knowing Emily would be home any minute. She arrived, oblivious to what was happening and fixated on depositing a check on her phone. Jason finally led her upstairs where in crudely cut sweet potatoes the words “Marry Me?” were laid out on a cutting board with the ring just below. Jason and Emily held hands and with a big smile said “Maybe.” Then she said yes!

Setting Sail

Come sail away

Our families are a bunch of ragbaggers and stinkpotters, and we're bridging the great nautical divide between power boats and sailboat with a 50' Catamaran with an outboard on the back. We'll have our parents and sisters with us as we sail the Chesapeake in mid-May.
