Although Karlene and Sergio attended the same High School they were only acquaintances. When Sergio deployed to Kuwait in 2015, he messaged Karlene on Facebook to reconnect. They never stopped talking. The couple spent years traveling back and forth to see each other as Karlene finished her doctoral program. The rest is history!

Sergio proposed to Karlene on their cruise vacation aboard the Carnival Sensation. They had just finished visiting Key West and were setting sail to their next port crossing through the Strait of Florida between Key West and Cuba. Because of this the couple have an ongoing debate whether the engagement occurred near Key West or Cuba. Sergio claims Cuba and Karlene says Key West.
