How We MetHow We Met

High School Sweethearts

Sergio and Jocelyne’s story didn’t start with fireworks or some big movie moment. It began at Miami Sunset Senior High on an ordinary day that changed everything. Jocelyne was a senior; Sergio, a junior whose schedule had just been switched. That random change placed him in her weight-training class, and by chance—or maybe by something bigger—they sat next to each other for attendance. Jocelyne noticed him right away. It wasn’t just that Sergio was handsome; it was the calm, confident kindness he carried. She saw him in gym clothes between classes and secretly hoped he’d get moved into her class. When it happened, she played it cool while butterflies went wild. Sergio noticed her too, though at first he thought she didn’t like him—her serious face fooled him. She was just nervous and overthinking every glance. Once they finally talked, everything clicked. Their connection came naturally. Then Senior Skip Day arrived. They’d been texting that morning; Sergio woke at 5 a.m. to get a quick pump before the beach. When they met by the water, everything felt right—easy laughter, no effort, just connection. Later that day he texted Jocelyne and asked her on a date. She can still see the message and the joy that came with it. On that first date she spent hours getting ready; he did too. They grabbed pizza and took a quiet walk, both nervous but comfortable, like they’d known each other forever. From then on they were inseparable—school brighter, weekends packed with little adventures, beach days, late-night talks, and inside jokes only they understood. A few months in, Jocelyne invited Sergio to church. Her steady faith rubbed off on him, and he began to feel peace and purpose. Surrounded by loved ones—and the girl who pointed him to God—Sergio chose to be baptized. It marked a new chapter for both of them. Glory to God for every step that led there. The following year brought a hard test: Sergio joined the Army. Jocelyne was proud and scared. At Fort Jackson they could talk only once a week, usually Sundays for about an hour, FaceTime if they were lucky. They wrote countless letters that bridged the distance and reminded them what they were fighting for—each other. Their faith carried them through. When reunion day finally came, neither slept the night before. Jocelyne searched the crowd until their eyes met. She forgot to breathe; they ran into a hug and cried—grateful, relieved, stronger than ever. Back home they picked up where they left off, now with a deeper sense of what love means: choosing each other daily, not just when it’s easy. Today they live for the little things: the gym together, spontaneous dates, summers full of beach days, and their favorite—staying in with dinner and a movie. They tease each other, laugh until they can’t breathe, and somehow turn errands into adventures. Their love isn’t perfect; it’s real. They grow through challenges, forgive quickly, communicate openly, and protect the friendship that started it all. When Jocelyne looks at Sergio, she still sees the boy who made her heart race in weight training. When Sergio looks at Jocelyne, he still sees the girl who changed everything. They don’t believe any of it was random. A schedule change, a beach day, a thousand small yeses—each part of a bigger plan. Looking ahead, the future is uncertain but the path is clear: hand in hand, grounded in faith, love, and laughter. Their home is built on prayer, patience, and joy. For them, love is grace and God’s timing is perfect. The story that began with a seating chart now continues—stronger, deeper, and full of hope for all that’s ahead, trusting that God brought them together for a reason.
