Our Love Story

From the start, it has all been God’s design. They met at summer camp. Chase’s first memory of her is of a poor girl forcefully covered in red paint and sent on stage in front of 200 people. The first thing Serene knew about him was that he wouldn’t stop talking about aardvarks for some reason. The first time they met, it was in the back of a loud, sweaty van. She was going to be a teacher. He had just decided to finally stop running from a call to ministry. A month later, they were close friends. Another month after that, the summer came to a close. They hugged, said their farewells, and then it was over. But then it wasn’t. For some reason (God’s reason), the camp friendship didn’t end like all their other ones did. What followed were long talks on the phone, floods of texts back and forth, and chaotic voice calls with our friends (we love you guys!). He didn’t want to date anytime soon. She could never imagine going out with him. Yet somehow, he started to not be able to get her out of his head. For some reason, she said yes to going on a date with him. God kept it going. Dates between friends, after December 12th, became dates as boyfriend and girlfriend. Their life became hour-drives to see each other. There were walks and hikes, conversations about theology, ice cream, long road trips, reading the Bible, thrifting, more theology, tulips, bookstores, family. They knew they loved each other when saying goodbye felt like not enough. They knew they were going to get married after God constantly used their laughter, tears, joy, and vulnerability to bring them closer to Him through each other. Chase proposed to her in sunlight on a stormy 21st afternoon of September. She told him yes. It has all been the Lord’s doing. All glory and praise be to Him. It would mean the world to us if you came to celebrate the work that the Lord is doing in our lives as He unites us in marriage to prepare us for a lifetime of serving Him alongside each other!
