It started nearly two decades ago with the gentle buzz of clippers and scissors. Armistead and Washington were both clients of the best barber in Texas, Melanie Berry. Melanie scheduled her clients at specific times. Therefore, they would see each other in passing, but only exchanged a few words. One evening, while Armistead was attending a graduate school dinner, at Washington’s favorite restaurant at the time, they ran into each other. In a more relaxed environment they finally had time to say more than two words to each other and the spark was ignited. Discovering their love for music and God would make this, as Sade sings, “No Ordinary Love”. Spending time together was never boring: going to concerts, eating out, hanging with friends, you name it they did it. Yet the moments they treasured most were being next to each other playing songs the other hadn’t heard. Unfortunately, the timing was not quite right for their relationship to blossom to its full potential. For that reason, they had to part. During those five years apart, a significant amount of individual growth took place for both of them; enabling them to create the kind of union they desired. Armistead prayed the last three of those five years apart for a helpmate. He didn’t know that helpmate would be Washington. So how did they get back together for the happy ending? At the same spot they initially met at years ago, they ran into each other on two separate occasions. At the second encounter, a couple weeks later, they were able to have a meaningful conversation. During that conversation, it felt like no one else was in the room besides them (thanks Chris Watson Gray for patiently waiting) and then it happened…with a single embrace they knew they were meant to be together. Since then, Washington and Armistead have been fully committed to making each other HAPPIER and helping each other continue with personal growth. Their relationship is a true testament to PATIENCE and LOVE!
