Alex and Joey met through a happy coincidence while getting their graduate degrees at Syracuse University. Alex lived in a house with Raven (then a stranger, now her maid of honor), who happened to be in Joey’s program. One day after class, Raven invited them both to get ice cream, and a friendship started up quickly from there. Sometimes your friends know you better than you know yourself. It didn’t take long for their friends to notice the chemistry between them, sparking near-daily questions around how they felt about each other. Their own realization came one afternoon just before winter break, while Alex was helping Joey clean a moldy shower curtain (yes, really, though Joey maintains he was just using it as an excuse to hang out with her. Smooth, right?). Somewhere between the second and third rinse, they both realized how they felt about each other. Still, it took Joey a few weeks into the following semester to muster up the courage to ask Alex out. She was nervous, but said yes. Their first date was at Phoebe’s, a small, cozy restaurant walking distance from campus. They’d return to the Syracuse staple several times as they fell in love. In the almost four years since, their time has been filled with love, laughter, and, yes, plenty of sports. Alex loves watching the Yankees and Knicks with Joey, even if he’s still getting her to come around to watching Giants games. That won’t stop as they embark on the next chapter of their lives as husband and wife.
